We informed you about how we had suddenly heard that she had gone to Cyprus and that a man had paid for her ticket and to buy her clothes and other things. We then heard that this man is a Muslim and that he wants to marry Adela. We breathed a small sigh of relief as we were happy that this was not a case of human trafficking (as so often happens with the orphans we work with) and that at least she was not being forced into the sex slave trade. Today we were able to talk with Adela on the phone in Cyprus and the news is much worse than we hoped. We would like to update you on this very important situation and ask for your prayers for Adela. Here are the facts as we know them: Adela went to Cyprus thinking that she was going to work and with the idea of meeting a young man who she thought was interested in her. When she arrived it turned out that this man is not from Cyprus, but from Pakistan, he is staying illegally in Cyprus, and that he is married and has children. He wanted to marry Adela in order to get into Romania and from there to get into Germany. We do not know for sure, but this man could very well be a terrorist! When Adela refused this arrangement, and refused to sleep with him, he sold her to someone else in Cyprus for 2000 Euros (about $3,088). This person was furious when Adela refused to sleep with him and he beat her. Adela ran away but was beaten and threatened. Somehow Adela was able to find a Romanian girl, named Alexandra (who told us on the phone that she wants to escape from Cyprus), who is helping her. Adela does not speak English, or any of the languages spoken in Cyprus. Alexandra has a "boyfriend" who beats and threatens her. Through her telephone we were able to talk to Adela, but when he came home he cut us off. His nephew is the one who bought Adela. Through our conversation with Adela we found out that her ticket from Budapest to Cyprus was round-trip! This was good news, only Alexandra's boyfriend had her ticket and would not give it to her. Luckily, Adela still has her passport. We called the airline and found out that her flight leaves tomorrow morning and that she has an electronic ticket. When we called back, Alexandra's boyfriend had come home and was mad. He would not let us talk with Adela but Diana was able to tell Alexandra to tell Adela to run away and to somehow get to the airport because her flight leaves tomorrow morning. The people who have been holding Adela, needless to say, are not going to let her go. We cannot call Alexandra back because her boyfriend will become suspicious and will beat her again and so all we can do now is hope that Adela is able to get to the airport, which is an hour away, and escape from these people. Cristi, our director in Romania, will go to the airport in Budapest tomorrow morning, which will be 11:00 this evening, June 4th, CST. May we ask for your prayers in this situation? The chances of Adela getting to the airport on her own are not good.
