The hospital is named in honor of Shri Babaji who was so concerned about the living conditions of the Kumaon people that He instructed his devotees to build a comprehensive health care center for them. Shri Babaji is acknowledged as the Shiva Mahavatar Babaji described by Paramahansa Yogananda in Autobiography of a Yogi. In the Hindu tradition, a Mahavatar is a human manifestation of the Divine who can materialise a body at will. The hospital serves the Kumaon region (in the foothills of the Himalayas) of India. The Kumaon people are extremely poor, and they suffer from a range of diseases that could be easily cured if adequate medical facilities were available. We started with seven health care professionals working on the side of a mountain in October of 1995.
